How to Choose a Gutter Guard

When deciding on the best gutter guards for fire needles, you can choose between three types: surface tension units, gutter filters, and plastic or mesh screens. No matter the type of gutter guard you buy, make sure that it is from a quality manufacturer.

Mesh screens are between the low-end gutter filter and the more expensive surface tension units. Plastic and mesh screens are often sold as DIY kits. They are sold in in feet, and many come with 5-inch samples so you can get an idea if will work in your gutter or not.

These types come in various designs and they’re also both called gutter guards which can be confusing. Let’s clear things up a bit

Why Mesh Screens are Popular

Screens are usually less expensive than covers, and sometimes it comes at the expense of durability. If you’re going to buy a screen make sure that it is from a reputable brand and that they’re durable.  A well-made screen gutter guard prevents large debris from getting all over your gutter. At the same time, it allows water to flow through unimpeded.

Majority of screen meshes are constructed from metal. The design is good enough to keep leaves at bay, and high-quality screens also keep pine needles and pests away. Thickness varies, but as long as it is sturdy and built from solid materials there won’t be any problems with it.

fine mesh gutter guards are the practical choice for many homeowners. These are easy to set under shingles and can be secured to the gutter or fascia for reinforcement. Mesh screen guards work like screens but they are more effective in keeping small particles like needles and seeds away.

If you’re going to buy a mesh screen gutter guard, look for one that keeps out shingle grit and other small particles. Compared to screens, mesh gutter guards are lower maintenance. Yes, it needs some cleaning but it’s only on occasion. A quick brush or blow is all that’s needed and you’re done.

Some mesh gutter guards are best set up under shingles as it reinforces the gutter to keep snow at bay. This type of installation is especially useful in cold climates.

Surface Tension

Surface tension guards are at their most effective if it’s installed so the guard’s slope is like that of the roof. With surface tension units, water ends up on the guard’s rounded nose and goes into the gutter directly. Debris go over so they don’t clutter the gutter. Every now and then some small debris may get in, but they’ll get washed out.

Surface tension units function only if it’s installed so its angle is akin to the roof. This can’t be done on lengthy gutter runs because they have to be pitched so water goes in the downspouts. Do not install surface tension guards on high fascia gutters as it’ll just cause more junk to get in.

Covers

A cover type is different from the typical micro mesh gutter screen. These cover guards prevent all elements from cluttering your gutter, and that includes water. These covers are situated above the gutter. It is set at a slanted angle as this allows water to flow onto the side instead of standing still in the gutter.

You can think of these covers as a roof for your gutter. Those designed to keep mosquitoes, twigs, pine needles and other debris away have a built-in screen. These are made from heavy-duty material and can handle heavy, continuous rain.

Plastic Screens

Plastic screens are widely used because they’re easy to set up. Styles vary but the process is the same, cut into parts and position each piece between the fascia and gutter. Screens are most effective in keeping leaves out.

One drawback with screens is the openings may be too big, allowing pine needles and seeds to get in. If pine needles and other stuff get entangled it could make cleaning difficult. You can make things easier for yourself by purchasing quality screens.

Foam and Brush Gutter Guards

Foam and brush gutter guards are also available. Foam gutter guards are affordable and they’re also easy to install. The biggest problem with foam gutter guards is they’re usually made from cheap materials and are not likely to last. Most foam gutter guards may also not be strong enough to handle heavy weather.

Because they’re often made from cheaper materials, foam gutter guards are more susceptible to wear and tear. Foam gutter guards are not as effective as steel screens in keeping out plants and seeds. Probably the worst thing about foam gutter guards is they’re combustible.

Brush gutter guards are similar to foam guards in that they’re more of a stop-gap solution to your gutter problems. These gutter guards do a decent job of keeping large debris out, but the smallest debris will get through. Some squirrels and birds even use brush gutter guards as resting places, causing more problems.

 Verdict

Micro mesh gutter guard installation has become easier as the product quality has improved tremendously. In the past, the problem was not finding a quality gutter guard, but now that’s no longer the case. Hopefully, the reviews and buyer’s guide here has made it easier for you to decide what to buy.
